Having been very recently introduced into squadron service on the Transpennine South routes (Cleethorpes), 185107 leaves Doncaster heading for Manchester Airport. (July-'06) Brand new stock now in the form of Siemens Desiro 185117 in the new 'Dynamic Lines' FirstGroup livery at Doncaster. The unit was engaged in staff training between Doncaster and Cleethorpes prior to introduction later in the year. (June-'06) The message on the platform is particularly apt here as 185121 waits for passengers on the curved terminus platforms at Newcastle. The new Desiro vehicles are longer than the previous 158 vehicles and so have to stop short to prevent scraping the platform edge. Good job the new trains have step boards! (Jan-'07) Siemens Class 185 DMUs are now common over the entire Transpennine Express network and the 158s are starting to be eliminated. One of the earlier of the build of 51, 185106 stands at Sheffield with a Manchester Airport working. (Nov-'06)

Originally intended for the London-Holyhead West Coast workings, capacity proved insufficient and they were moved onto XC routes (where capacity is still insufficient). (Apr-'06) Just a few years ago, this would have been a loco hauled working but things move on, as 221138 leaving Southampton Central with a Northbound service shows. (Nov-'06)

(Mar-'06) As part of the C6 (underframe and external only) overhauls currently being undertaken on the Central 150 fleet, an attractive new livery is being applied. 150014 is seen here at Worcester Shrub Hill. (May-'06) Something not usually seen at Birmingham New Street, Valley lines dedicated 150280 leaving with an Aberystwyth service in the pouring rain. (May-'06) 150002 underneath the cavernous New Street station with a service for Stafford. (Nov-'06) Shortly to continue their part in the great DMU reshuffle along with the other members of the 'Anglian exile' fleet, 150227 slows for a signal check on the approach to Bescot, working a Walsall-Birmingham 'Semi Fast' service. 158964 newly formed from 158815 and half of 158816 at Cardiff Central. A migrant from the South West; 158860, which has had stints with both Wessex Trains (now FGW) and Arriva Trains Wales in the last year or so but now on lease to Northern, heads through Pelaw with a Sunderland coast working. (Apr-'07) The new Platform 3 at Edinburgh Waverley uses what once was a carriage siding, predominantly used for the stabling of the third North Berwick unit (used during the peaks). Now used for terminating services as illustrated by 158724 with a Newcraighall service. An additional platform has also been built at Haymarket - known as Platform '0' which will be used for services which are turned back short due to the Waverley engineering works. (Jan-'07) A number of DMU's were in for works attention during the Crewe Open Days, with Pastie liveried 158825 was undergoing attention to its light clusters among other things. (Sep-'05) Placed on hire to First Great Western for a few months after the launch of the new franchise, 158741 featuring Scotrail branding is pictured here at Bristol Temple Meads with a service for Cardiff. (May-'06) Ginsters liveried 158821 leaving Newport with a Gloucester-Maesteg service. (May-'06) Former South West Trains units 158789 and 158786 head through Aston en route to Edinburgh Haymarket as 5Z58 which originated at Eastleigh Works. (Feb-'07) Usually a duty for a Northern 142 or 156, passengers on the late evening MetroCentre-Chathill service had luxury tonight when 158801 from Transpennine Express substituted. Free first class all round...! (Jan-'07) At the time, a recent repaint into Northern livery, 158752 departs Doncaster for Sheffield. (Sep'-07)

156449 at Carlisle. 156505 (one of the batch funded by SPT) at Carlisle (June-'01) Ex works 156402 carrying undercoat with purple doors. This was supposed to be the first of the 156s heading to Scotrail from Central in return for an equal number of 158s. The deal got called off and '402 returned to traffic with Central in white. Seen here at Ely. 156421 in scruffy FirstGroup 'Barbie' colours leaves Carlisle with a Barrow in Furness service via the Cumbrian Coast. (July-'06) Northern Spirit liveried 156438 arriving at Prudhoe with a Hexham bound 'stopper' service. (Apr-'07) In First Group corporate livery minus the branding, 156441 arrives into Carlisle with a train from Leeds. (Apr-'06) Before deciding on the final dark blue livery, Northern Rail repainted several units in different variations. In 'tester number 2' colour scheme, 156460 arrives at MetroCentre with a terminating service. (Aug-'06) Following the swap involving the 'one' 150s heading to Central in return for 156s, 156402 stands at Norwich, still in white but now carrying 'one' branding (June-'05) The 'one' livery does suit the 156s well, especially when ex-works. 156417 arrives at Norwich from Yarmouth. (June-'05) 156446 was painted into First Scotrail livery for the launch of the new franchise, and is currently the only one of its kind to carry the livery. Seen here arriving at Glasgow Central (July-'05) 156433; the first train to carry the SPT Carmine and Cream livery which was brought in to replace the old orange and black version. It also gained the name 'The Kilmarnock Edition' following unveiling at Kilmarnock. Seen here at Glasgow Central (July-'05) In base blue livery, 156455 leaves Carlisle with a Newcastle train. The base blue livery was applied during C6 overhaul when the new operator of the Northern franchise was unknown. (Apr-'06)

170506 at Cambridge. A new service run by Midland Mainline to Cardiff!? Unfortunately not...170102 is now in the 'careful' hands of Central. 170399 is currently the only member of the class to carry an advertising livery. It is also one of 3 fitted with First Class seating which can be used by anyone due to Central being a standard-only operator. Seen here at Ely forming a Stansted Airport service. (May-'05) In order to cope with existing traffic levels during the ongoing Edinburgh engineering works, a number of new platforms had to be constructed. Known as the 'Balmoral' platform - named because of its proximity to the Balmoral Hotel - was constructed on what was a through carriage siding. Split in two by a crossover, each 'side' is capable of taking a 5-car Voyager. 170393 is shown here. 170430 waits with a Glasgow Queen Street shuttle at what is now known as the 'klondyke' platform and built on what was formerly a long siding as part of the 2007 Edinburgh engineering works. (Jan-'07) ex-Hull Trains 170396 departs from Edinburgh Waverley with a service to Newcraighall (July-'05) The firstGroup corporate identity is well established in Scotland, with most of the Class 170 fleet carrying the purple and pink livery, which does suit them. 170394 and 170433 seen here at Edinburgh Waverley.
